MEET SPENCER MOORE

Spencer’s Work with The Hairy Chin

Women’s health advocate Spencer Moore, age 43, originally from Raleigh, NC, is based in Barcelona, Spain. She founded The Hairy Chin, a nod to those pesky female chin hairs, around a question she couldn't shake: women are told to advocate for their health, but who's actually teaching them how? She decided she would.

After more than four decades living with complex and overlapping mental and physical health diagnoses, she reached a pivotal moment at 40 with an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis caught on her first mammogram.

Spencer launched The Hairy Chin platform in 2024, combining her lived experiences with her formal training as a certified women’s health coach, breast health educator, and breathwork instructor. She serves as a bridge between patients and providers, advocating for better communication, clarity, and collaboration.

Spencer’s Story

If Spencer’s life could be defined by two words, they would be health and creativity. Let’s start with the health, more on the creativity in a bit.

Her relationship with healthcare began at eight months old, with a handful of surgeries and hospitalizations before her 10th birthday. Growing up with a cardiovascular surgeon father and a diabetic nutritionist mother, she learned the ins and outs of the healthcare system from the patient's chair to the surgeon's dinner table.

Her health journey would become a knotted ball of yarn throughout the years, including

struggles with both her mental and physical health. PCOS, Major Depressive Disorder, migraines, eczema, hypothyroidism, and inflammatory disease kept her busy jumping from specialist to specialist. One physician memorably referred to her as a “hot potato patient,” a description that perfectly captured the complexity of her medical history.

Alongside her health journey, Spencer built a successful career as a creative professional, spending more than twenty-five years working in graphic art and design, branding, copywriting, and audiovisual storytelling. A lifelong mixed-media studio artist, she has always been fascinated by the connections between creativity, health, and wellbeing.

In 2016, Spencer came to Barcelona to attend a five-week intensive studio art program. The city, the environment, and the Mediterranean Sea captured her spirit. She returned to North Carolina, packed some bags, and within a few months was back in Barcelona to build a life. While her coordinates changed, her health didn’t. Navigating a foreign healthcare system in a second language and in a new culture has broadened her perspective on the female medical experience.

At age forty, she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer caught on her first screening mammogram. During her treatment, she trained as a breast health educator, aka a “Lemonista” through the Know Your Lemons foundation. What she witnessed in her sessions stopped her in her tracks. Women would walk in scared and overwhelmed, but after an hour of information, education, and some laughs, they walked out empowered. The next step on her path of female health advocacy became obvious.

In 2024, Spencer launched The Hairy Chin to help women become more informed, confident, and active participants in their healthcare. Today, she combines lived experience, professional training, and decades of curiosity to educate, empower, and advocate for women navigating their individual health journeys.

Spencer was raised in Raleigh, NC. She resides in Barcelona with her Catalan husband and French bulldog, Zelda.
